Oh My God This Semester May Kill Me (Project Proposal Blogging)
21 March 2025
Seeing everyone else's proposals for their final projects stressed me out and made me feel unprepared, even though I'm very accustomed to project work. My project for my studies in this course will be a very simple turn-based combat system I've designed with influence from Pillars and other games. I'm hoping to, through the project, come to understand further what makes interactive media work, as well as the enormous obstacles to making something even very small scale. I can share my documentation on my design philosophy for the combat system, as well as the progress logs as I work on the project. For my research, I hope to research realism vs immersion in interactive media. Specifically video games and TTRPG's. More specifically Pillars of Eternity, DnD, a couple of other games, and how worldbuilding, UX and UI designs can hinder immersion or realism, and specifically the circumstance where they futher immersion, but hinder realism. I want to use my own experience playing the games as well as anything I learn from creating the video game and worldbuilding as my primary source. And for secondary sources, I will be using the reactions of others who play it (reviews by fans, journalists and critics online).
